Waterford Fine Gael TD and Minister of State John Cummins represented the Irish Government at a reception to mark 75 years of the Civil Defence at Árasan Uachtaráin today.
President Michael D Higgins addressed representatives from each Civil Defence unit across the country, including two Waterford members, Commander Jason Conway and Commander Thomas Durney.
Speaking following the event, Minister Cummins said: “It was an honour to represent the Government today at an event in Áras Uachtaráin which marked 75 years of the Civil Defence in Ireland.
“Members of the Civil Defence are the unsung heroes of our communities, ordinary individuals who take on extraordinary responsibilities.
“Their work stands as a powerful testament to the spirit of service and selflessness.
“Whether supporting emergency services or coordinating rescue efforts during times of crisis, Civil Defence members play a vital role in ensuring public safety and resilience.
“What makes their contribution especially profound is the fact that many serve not for recognition or reward, but out of a genuine desire to help others and skilfully step into danger when others are seeking safety.
“I was delighted to meet with members from across the country and to thank them and their families for their work, dedication, and compassion.”
