Background
John Cummins was elected to Seanad Eireann in April 2020 on the Labour Panel. He is currently a member of the Joint Oireachtas committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
John was first elected to Waterford City Council in 2009 at the age of 21, and was re-elected in 2014 and 2019. He has served as Mayor of Waterford on two occasions (2013/14 & 2015/16) and served as Chairman of the South East Regional Authority in 2010/11.
During his time as a member of Waterford City and County Council, John served as Chair of the Planning Strategic Policy Committee and as a member of both the Economic Development and Transportation Strategic Policy Committees. He also served as Fine Gael group leader and as a member of the Corporate Policy Committee.
John is a graduate of University of Limerick with a fist class honours degree in Physical Education and Geography Teaching. He has taught in a number of schools, most recently St. Paul's Community College in Waterford City.
