Minister of State for Planning & Local Government, John Cummins TD has welcomed this morning’s announcement that rural roads in County Waterford are set to benefit from funding of €506,930 under the Local Improvement Scheme.
Minister Cummins noted today’s announcement provides €17.55 million for rural roads across the country, which marks an increase of €2 million for the scheme.
“I’m delighted to see funding announced for rural roads and laneways in Waterford. The funding will see our laneways and non-public roads across the county receive improved access to homes, farms and outdoor amenities.
“This scheme is a vital source of funding for non-public roads that are not normally maintained by local authorities.”
The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) provides funding to help local authorities carry out improvement works on private and non-publicly maintained roads.
Local authorities are responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works under the scheme, in consultation with residents/landowners.
“Farmers and homeowners who use a laneway to access parts of their land can make a small contribution to the improvement and the scheme provides the rest. This ensures that they can access their homes on better quality roads.
“Across the country €17.55 million has been allocated under the scheme with ring-fenced funding for roads on our islands.
“I’m delighted to see €506,930 for Waterford and look forward to seeing the work carried out,” concluded Minister Cummins.
